Introduction to Science-fiction TV drama

1) How does Class meet the conventions of a TV drama series? Class meets the conventions of a TV drama because it has sub-genres such as school and its main genre which is science-fiction. It also consists of conflict and dilemmas which is the alien invasion and has an ensemble cast where it doesn't have on main character and focuses on other characters as well.

2) What conventions of the science-fiction genre can you find in the Class trailer? List as many as you can and use NCIS to help you. Conventions of the science-fiction genre that I can find are setting where it shows different planets with lave and a hellish feel. Also the iconography which uses shadow, darkness and laser lights which has elements of horror and science-fiction to show the aliens have invaded earth which is really troublesome and the narrative has connotations of the science-fiction genre because its narrative is about aliens invasion, parallel universes, dangers and threats to the world, war and conflict, and portals to other worlds and planets. Lastly the characters which are humans and aliens and the doctor.

3) What other genres are suggested by the trailer (e.g. horror)? Is Class an example of a modern hybrid-genre show?
The genres suggested by the trailer are science-fiction but other genres are suggested like horror which is shown in the iconography which is darkness and shadow connoting the elements of horror. Also teen-drama is shown by the characters being teenagers who are students and teacher as well as the setting which is in a high school. This shows that Class is an example of a modern hybrid genre show.

4) Class is a spin-off from Doctor Who. At what point does the character of the Doctor appear in the trailer? The Doctor appears at 1:15 where he says "You've heard of me haven't you" which seems like it is directed at the audience who are fans of Doctor who and will recognise him.

5) Who do you think the target audience for Class is? Is this a typical target audience for the science-fiction genre? Give reasons for your answer. The target audience for Class is teenagers and fans of Doctor Who series. This is because the heroes and main characters of Class are teenagers and Class is set in a high school. And Doctor Who fans because they will recognise the Doctor in the trailer and it is a spin-of of Doctor Who. Yes this is a typical target audience for a the science-fiction genre.
