Audience Effects Theory

 1) Write a definition of a passive audience: This is the view that the audience takes in media passively and this message has the same effect on everyone.

2) Write a definition of an active audience: This is a more open-minded and modern audience that speaks out their opinion on the media they consume and don't react passively.

3) Write a definition of the hypodermic needle theory: The definition of the Hypodermic needle theory that it is a suggestion that the audiences always react passively and believe all the media they have consumed.

4) Write down a media product for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and WHY it fits that particular audience use/gratification: 

INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE: The news 
 > Why: The news is information/surveillance because it informs the world about things that are happening everywhere and information you didn't know.
PERSONAL IDENTITY: 13 Reasons Why
 > Why:  13 Reasons Why is a personal identity because it talks about the characters lives, backstories and about important things like depression, bullying and school life which some of the audience/consumers may relate to.
DIVERSION/ENTERTAINMENT: Avengers: Endgame
 > Why: Avengers Endgame is diversion/entertainment because you feel many emotions and can get away from reality while watching the character in action and thrill.
RELATIONSHIPS: Love Island
 > Why: Love Island is relationships because the audience can ship character that the like together and have a connection.

5) Re-watch the clip from Blue Planet above and write a paragraph analysing how elements of the clip offer the audience pleasures or gratifications (use media terminology from Uses and Gratifications theory and the 3 Vs - notes outlined above).

The Blumler & Katz Uses and Gratification Theory is applied in Blue Planet 2 trailer at the shot 1:30-1:36 information/surveillance is used at that shot so that the audience can learn more about the ocean and information on things they might have never known/seen "never seen before" about or normally see like the certain parts of the ocean "uncharted depths" and this is also shown when Sir David Attenborough says "allow us to voyage further and deeper". 

Plus Entertainment/diversion is used in Blue Planet 2 trailer and the Visceral pleasure at 2:06-2:36 this may make the audience that they are travelling exploring seeing things and places most of the audience wouldn't get to see every day.

Also, relationships because many people have made a connection with the fantastic Sir David Attenborough. For example older audiences that have watched Sir David Attenborough since his career started; the older audience that has grown up with him; most of the audiences that love to hear his voice
